STL helps hundreds of Indonesians to become economically independent through Mandiri Projects. “Mandiri” means self sufficient in Bahasa Indonesian, and thanks to its supporters, STL has been able to introduce this self sufficiency in a number of ways. To do this, STL will make a loan to an individual or organization (such as an orphanage) to start a business. As the business develops, the loan must be paid back, and the business is expected to tithe to a local church or community organization.
A fishing village whose boats were destroyed in a tsunami regained its livelihood, thanks
to the Mandiri Project, while another village is benefitting from a vanilla farm which was
developed with Mandiri Project funding. Seamstresses, cell phone sales and small
markets are other examples of successful Mandiri Project support that is
benefitting a growing number of villages and families.
